1. Rise of the Droids

The hype around robots stealing our jobs is not new. Perhaps what is so scary this time round, is that a lot of technology creeping in into our work and our homes are the stuff of sci-fi movies. But as Nicola reassures us, AI is only as good as the data behind it. There are indeed remarkable advances made in technology, but if the Dull, the Dirty and the Dangerous are replaced by robots - then we can play to our strengths that make us uniquely human: our ability to care and empathise.

Simon Sinek, the author of the Little Book of Inspiration gave an interview about Millenials that went viral in the beginning of 2017. This shows, that there is this big Hype focusing on Millenials, whereas there are 4 other generations at the workplace, not least the mid-life jugglers, who have young children and elderly parents to take care of. 

But age is just one facet of diversity, there are other seismic changes in the workforce linked to culture, ethnicity, personality type, skills, abilities... How do we create work-life balance for everyone, when one size doesn't fit all?

4. Death of Distance

With the rising number of global and dispersed teams, how do we create trust and an environment that fosters collaboration? On the one hand remote teams can connect via different collaboration tools, but we all know hat nothing beats a face-to-face meeting. 

5. Death of Dr. No

We are all consumers, and more and more research points to the fact that we stay consumers, even when we are at work. We approach our work with a consumer mindset and also want to chose our own tools to work on. More and more employees are bringing their own devises to work, simply because they know how to use them and prefer to work on them. This is a nightmare for the IT department. If they say NO, employees will still bring their devices to stay connected even during the workday, and this creates an even worse situation than giving permission and then working around it. So let's focus on saying NO less often and figuring out ways to work around employees' needs. 

6. Death of Dolly

Dolly Parton sang the hit song Working 9 to 5 for the film with the same title in 1980. Since then technology has enabled us to work from anywhere at anytime. The issue is no longer connecting, but how do we disconnect. Our devices have multiple communication channels and social media interfaces open, and on average we are interrupted every 3 minutes. So the challenge is finding the time and space to disconnect, to focus on certain tasks or switch off from work.

If employees experience high demands and low levels of control, they will be stressed, and this doesn't serve any purpose. If however leaders allow a greater sense of control and autonomy for their workers to influence when, where and how they work, you raise the level of control, and can ensure less stressed and a more engaged workforce.
